Atlas Van Lines provides the report for an entire year so the 2008 report should be coming out sometime in January.

Unemployment by State as of Oct 21, 2008

Michigan and Rhode Island are tied for the highest unemployment in all 50 states. With the denial of the bail out I don't believe its going to get any better in Michigan.

SPRINT SUCKS

Yes SPRINT service is awful and yes that is my technical opinion and experience. There is a saying that you get what you pay for but with SPRINT as your cell phone service you don't really get that because there is no service.
As I travel across the country I have experienced the worst cell phone service with a high possibility of dropped calls, no service areas, poor quality and bottom line unreliable service.
It appears sprint cell towers are fewer are far between then any other cell provider. They use an ancient cell technology and don't seem to be keeping up with upgrades as the two major players which is ATT and Verizon.
No cell service is perfect, but some providers like SPRINT are very very far away from the ball game.
If you want a reliable cell phone then pick a major player like ATT or Verizon and stay away from the cell phone company that appears to be going down in a ball of flames. They have to cut costs somewhere and its my believe its cell towers and service also possibly research and development.
This is from somone who has tried multiple phones by this company because EDS forces there employees to use this crap service because of some special B.S. Deal that they worked out. So we all suffer unreliable service which in turn affects our customer relationship by not getting the customer calls until later when you have service.
You have been warned.

American Dollar isn't worth beans

American companies have shot the American economy in the foot. With off shoring the majority of the work America doesn't have much to offer when other counties are doing all the work. So what does America have to offer to keep the American Dollar high?

I sure hope our next President (anyone but Obama) builds the American Dollar to what it should be. It's hard to believe such a powerful country is going broke, economy falling quickly, unemployment rising, prices of everything rising, crime rising.

What happened to the days America had factories and had an export to other countries. Now we just have imports. Everything is imported because its cheaper that way. Well picking the cheaper route is also killing our economy and slowly bleading America.

I don't think its right that we have to rebuild a country after a war. Spending a large amount of money America doesn't have to spend. Why are other countries doing so well? Why is the Euro worth so much more then an American dollar? I don't see any European Country putting money into a war or rebuilding a country that got smushed. They are a bit wiser with there money then America seems to be.

It's time for some American tough love. Stop supporting all these countries and support yourself. We have so many hands out helping others we don't have any left to hold ourselves up. It's time to pull our resources back home and focus on a struggling America. Put the anger towards other countries to the backburner. Stop being the judge and jury on what is right in the world and focus on us, the American citizens.

Karaoke Software Review

I first have to mention some requirements to be labeled "awesome software"
1. Multi-platform (meaning windows, mac, etc.) If your software only supports Windows go home or back in the 1980's or 90's (prior to OS X)

2. Feature rich (meaning the software attempts to capture a large base of users, just not a select few)

3. Good Support (when we have questions either provide a Knowledgebase with answers that are helpful or a forum that gets responses)

If you do a search for Karaoke Software you may run across:
Karma by Latshaw Systems - Windows Only (fair)
CompuHost by INVICION - Windows Only -- (fair)
PowerKaraoke by DOBLON - Windows Only -- (horrible)
KaraFun - Windows Only -- (horrible)
kJams - Mac OS X -- (above average)

TomTom 920T is okay but not great

So I went that step to obtain a GPS in the event I am on the way to a gig and get stuck in traffic or construction I could find an alternative route to help keep me ontime.

I originally wanted one of the Consumer Reports top rated Garmin GPS' seeing how many of your top companies like rental car companies, military, field engineers all use Garmin GPS units of some sort. So in my mind, Garmin has the stuff together, they would have to for such high profile customers.

So I was in search of a Garmin and to come find out, no retail store sells an upscale Garmin, just the low end models of Garmin (not highly rated on Consumers). Okay, so the only decent GPS they sold was a TomTom 920T which I found at Office Depot. So I bit the bullet and purchased it.

Now it offers the ability to download updates using the data connection on your bluetooth phone (if its compatiable). Big bummer with the phones TomTom has decided to make compatiable with all there TomTom GPS units. if you have a sony phone then you have a great shot at this feature working. If you have the number one phone for business users (any blackberry) then you are out of luck. Some other phones are supported but not fully. This is a HUGE disappointment. So all the PLUS features TomTom advertises aren't even available because the phone you have probably won't work.

Now on TomTom's defense, I have read it is more of an issue with the phone vendors then TomTom. For instance the Blackberry issue relates more to RIM not wanting TomTom to access the data functions of the phones. It has been said if you downgrade your Blackberry a revision or two, the feature will work but the latest software release for you blackberry RIM has blocked all internet access from outside the phone via bluetooth or tether.

Another part of the TomTom I do not really care for is its not very accurate. Some people say its because of the area I live in (kinda in the country) but my thought is, Satellite's are what pinpoint my location, not population.

Anyhow, I'm not real impressed with the TomTom and if I had to do it all over again I would just wait for the Garmin to show up in the mail. Even though it appears the Garmin PLUS features wouldn't work for me either because they use a seperate antenna that uses this direct connect which is only valid in more the populated areas. So if I am not going to have any PLUS features from Garmin or TomTom then I would definitly choose the Garmin for its more accuracy.

Websites Moved

I maintain three websites

http://www.mywiseguys.com (My DJ Business is hosted on hostmonster.com)

http://www.hosangit.com (My IT Business was hosted on siteground.com)

http://www.ourholychurch.com (non-denominational church website also was hosted on siteground.com)

Since my subscription to siteground expires at the end of this month I decided to move off them and over to hostmonster which I have been pretty happy with. I will say that siteground support is much, much quicker to respond but I usually only need support once a year (knock on wood).

So I rebuilt the two siteground websites on hostmonster so it will look different but all the information is there.

Relay for Life Done

After 29 hours of playing music and karaoke, I'm done with the Madison Heights Relay for Life.

It was a nice experience that I was very happy I did. It is a good cause to raise money for the American Cancer Society in effort to find a cure for cancer.

I also learned alot about what we can do to help prevent getting cancer that we don't think about. Some things suprised me like over cooking your meat, putting non-microwave safe plastic containers in the microwave, bug spray, etc.. alot of suprises.

Glad its done and I'm still in the process of sleep recovery but will be ready to go by this weekend, I hope.

Oil Companies taking everything for themselves

Today I saw that Gas Prices went up, Again. I am very, very tired of the Oil Companies stealing our money. We need the government to get involved and regulate the oil and other energy related items that we don't have a choice on. For instance Consumers Energy here in Michigan is the only energy choice we have for Electricity and Gas. They could raise the prices as high as they wish and we wouldn't have a choice because we need those items. Same goes for gas prices, but the oil companies know this and are not hesitating to take full advantage of that fact that we don't have a choice.

I really like this video and figured I would share it with you.

Here is a link that shows National Gas Prices

Here is a link to several YouTube video clips of the Truck Strike. I'm glad they are standing up against these outrageous gas prices. Did you know those big trucks get about 4mpg of diesel fuel?

No fish lake

It was obvious these last few days that long lake in Alpena, MI, it is just too early to go fishing. My best friend and I spent hours and hours trolling and casting and jigging long lake for fish.

What started as a goal for walleye ended up being a desperate plea for anything to include grass pike, which we still left empty handed but not from the lack of trying. We both have the sunburns as proof.

We tried crankbait at first with no luck. We then tried jigging with the new leeches by gulp with no luck. Then we tried a crawler harness with some fresh fat night crawlers and still not even a nibble.

Maybe next time but not this time.

Kickin my own butt!

Today, I am working in my home office as I normally do and as all of you know I live on my MacBook Pro laptop. I work my primary job, my DJing business and of course all my family stuff like this blog, pictures, videos and music on this one laptop. I try to remember to back it up once a week on an external hard-drive in the event something ever does happen to it I could quickly restore to another Mac.

As I was working and talking on my cell phone which was plugged in being charged, I went to the printer to grab something and the power cord of my phone pulled my full cup of coffee onto my MacBook Pro. As I turned around and saw what happened some not church worthy words escaped my mouth over and over again as I paniced and grabbed my laptop up and ran into the kitchen for a towel to begin soaking up the spilled coffee from my laptop.

I have pulled the battery from underneath to find coffee hiding there as well. I sprayed compressed air in every open compartment I can find in effort to push anything liquid out of an opening.

Its now laying on my desk on its left side in hopes that anything liquid will run out of it. Its been laying there for about an hour and I haven't seen anything laying on the desk that would signify coffee remains. I am going to wait a full 24 hours before I try to turn it back on to give it time to dry.

The good news in all of this is that it was still working great with coffee laying all over its keys and soaking into its crevices. I am praying like no other that she'll be fine and life goes on but with drinks at a safe distance.

Microsoft Office 2008 on the Mac

Now it is impossible to say that Microsoft Office is the greatest, must have, software package for any mac or pc for office work.

I was quite excited when the new Intel version of Microsoft Office was released that I purchased it very shortly after it was released. In some ways I am very pleased with this new mac version of Microsoft Office but in other ways VERY upset at Microsoft.

Let me begin by saying no other application on my system locks up or crashes more then once every three months and that is only with the same applications. Microsoft Office (especially Excel) crashes on a regular basis. I send the error reports but I believe they go in a spam folder at Microsoft. How much time are they spending on fixing any issues? I don't think any time since I haven't seen any significant updates.

So be warned that on a mac that your Excel will crash so often that it is deemed unreliable and I can not rely on it for anything but looking at an excel spreadsheet. I am forced to use Excel in my VMWare Fusion Windows XP session.

Florida Excitement

I have joined the army of weekend warriors that have been contracted
to come from Michigan to Florida to run the cash room at Renaissance
Festival. Sounds easy enough... leave Friday and come home Sunday.
All flights and hotel paid for.

The surprise comes into play when you find out that the hotel is only
$62/night (Days Inn by Busch Gardens) is in the crack part of town.
Friday night the street outside our hotel was filled with cops and
flashing lights until about 2am when I passed out from hearing the
sounds of the police helicopter flying overhead.

The Festival is on 25 acres of land versus the 300 acres in Michigan
so it is a little smaller and we are getting some negativity from the
people who worked here previously. So the fun continues and we will
find out.

Such a Busy Life

Life is going full speed ahead with a multitude of activities. My work has been keeping me traveling during the week (Tuesday-Thursday) with Monday and Friday to make up the work I wasn't able to accomplish because I was too busy doing work out of town and/or traveling.

My business is moving forward but I am now awaiting the Line of Credit forms to arrive in the mail. I will then move forward with first getting an enclosed trailer and then getting the equipment.

I am also traveling to Florida to work the Renaissance Festival three weekends to help pay for some odds and ends (02/22-24, 03/14-16, 03/21-23). So yes, I am a traveling man and very busy.

Why I choose Apple

When someone tells me they are having computer problems I explain to them that the problems come with owning a Windows machine.  Microsoft continues to patch and upgrade a very old operating system and it's truly not Microsoft's fault and more the very ancient logical design of the PC that limits what Microsoft can do.

Anyhow, those that do look outside the box, those that stop following the rest of the sheep will see there are other choices out there besides a windows based machine.  Especially now adays when the only choice you have is Windows Vista which should  of never left beta (development).

Apple's Mac OS X operating system has been very stable since it was released.  It is based on the unix operating system which is what every high secure, highly sensitive servers use because the unix is known to be a very reliable operating system.

Now that I have discussed the operating systems, how about the manufactures of the windows machines versus the apple product.  I am given a top of the line Dell laptop computer every two years to use for work.  After so many blue screens of death I purchased a powerbook and ran Virtual Machine for those Windows programs.  My dell's monitor falls off its hinges, battery is shot and won't keep a charge, key's have came off, the plastic case creeks when you lift it.

My Apple laptop has not faultered once.  It always works, it has been 5 years and it works great and I can load the latest operating system that Apple has released on it.

It's a matter of Quality versus Quantity.  Everyone says how much more expensive Apple products are over others and I tell them that if you were to purchase a car or a house would you want to pay a little extra for a quality product or are you looking for the cheapest.  You get what you pay for.

Michigan for Sale

Everyone is leaving Michigan!! People are giving away their homes, going into foreclosure just to get out of this state as they keep raising taxes and utilities to compensate for the far fewer customers and residents.

Schools are closing and consolidating because people are leaving. This has a snowball effect in the worst way.

They say Michigan will hit bottom before they can begin rebuilding but I say we have been at the bottom for a very long time. Look at the United Van Line reports I have below. A high outbound of people since they first starting watching outbound and inbound traffic.

Michigan is only doing good if the automobile companies like GM, Ford and Chrysler are doing good and guess what? They haven't been doing good for a long time (since late 90's) and it shows. So as they go down, they are taking the state of Michigan with them.

We have a senator that concentrates on education and stresses how important it is. Of course its important but you know what else is important? Having students in the class room, not worrying about your kid getting robbed on the way to school by one of the thousands of homeless people that couldn't afford to move out of Michigan.

If there was ever a time Michigan needed a miracle it's now!

So come you big businesses.... how much are you paying for real estate somewhere else (I guarantee you its cheaper here). How much are you paying for those employees? (I am quite sure you could get a good deal on employees here).

GM pretty much rebuilt Detroit... Does someone want to come in and rebuild Flint? It has a very excellent airport (Bishop) connection to multiple freeways, not to far away from Canada and a much better trip for truck drivers to the west (avoiding the I-94 mess).

Check out these reports from a very big moving company "United Van Lines"

2007
States in the Great Lakes region generally showed an outbound trend, according to United’s records. Ranked No. 1 on the high-outbound list last year, Michigan (67.8%) once again captured the top outbound spot.

2006
Ranked No. 2 on the high-outbound list last year, Michigan (66.0%) moved up a spot to tie for the top outbound state on this year’s list. Michigan saw a 2.1% increase over its 2005 numbers.

2005
Michigan (63.9%) – From the inception of the study, Michigan has been an outbound state.

2004
Michigan (60.9%) reached its highest outbound level since 1982

2003
The states that border Lake Michigan were categorized as “high
outbound”: Illinois (60.1%), Michigan (58.1%), Wisconsin (55.1%), and Indiana,
(61.2%).

flickr vs picasa vs snapfish vs photoworks vs shutterfly

So many choices to choose from and yet which is the correct one.

Through experimentation of each of these we rate them in this order
1. flickr (owned by Yahoo now) does include an iPhoto plugin to upload pictures
2. picasa (owned by Google now) does include an iPhoto plugin to upload pictures
3. photoworks - does include an iPhoto export assistant
4. shutterfly - does include an iPhoto export assistant
5. snapfish - does not include the ability to export pictures from iPhoto

Flickr is the leader when it comes to online photo storage and sharing (of course they do have the backing of Yahoo).  Of course it does have its issues as I find it very cumbersome and not as easy to navigate as it should be.  Why can't we create albums within albums... I miss that ability.

Picasa is very convenient being a part of my google account and I do so much with google now that I would love to use them as my photo warehouse as well but they lack a lot of features that flickr has.  Also not sure if I am a big fan of them sending the photos to another vendor (right now its shutterfly or photoworks) to have them printed.  So its almost like google knows they can manage the pictures better but someone else can take care of the printing.  We have had very bad luck with quality pictures coming from shutterfly and do not recommend them what so ever.

Photoworks is a nice system that I wish I would like more but they have a lot of restrictions on space and similar items where flickr and picasa are pretty much wide open.

MyWiseGuys Business Cards arrived

Today I got my new business cards that I ordered from VistaPrint which include my new phone number that is used strictly for the business.

I picked the glossy print this time and love it. It looks far more professional then the 100lb matte finish I had last time and which was a little more expensive.

All in all VistaPrint charged me around $40 for 250 business cards printed front and back (has the web url www.mywiseguys.com on the back). Not complaining because I did do comparison shopping on printing business cards and VistaPrint was the same price as everyone else (even a bit cheaper compared to some) and I now I know I am getting quality with VistaPrint.

Now we are playing a suicide league for draft order and I am willing to bet I will be 4th or 5th pick (because I am 4th or 5th pick every year).

How the suicide league works is you put in a full lineup (1 QB, 2 RB, 2 WR, 1 TE, 1 K and 1 Defense) and you can not pick more then two players from each team in the playoff’s. Who ever gets the most points from there suicide team gets to choose first where they want to sit in the draft, and so on and so forth and who ever got the lowest points in the suicide league gets whatever position is left over. The Warlords are playing but more for fun then anything, it doesn’t count for anything but bragging rights.

Filet Mignon in the Oven

Some us live in cold weather (like Michigan) and don't want to dig out our BBQ grills but still want a juicy steak. So here is a way to cook a Filet Mignon in the Oven.

Note: Prepare your sides for your steaks will be cooked in about 16minutes

Step 1
Add any seasonings that you like and gently rub them into the meat. This will help to keep the flavor in. If you prefer to use a marinade and soak your steak overnight that is also great.

Step 2
You will need to have a large skillet and one tablespoon of vegetable oil. Pour the oil in the large skillet (preferably one that can be place in the oven as well such as an iron skillet).
Heat the oil on medium until you notice small wisps of smoke appear, then place your mignon steaks in the skillet.

Step 3
Sear each steak for 3 minutes on each side. This helps to hold in the natural juices of the filet steaks and also aids in keeping your steaks tender.

Step 4
Place the pan in the oven and bake in a pre-heated oven on 375 degrees Fahrenheit. For a rare steak you will want to bake for 4 to 6 minutes, for medium 6 to 8 minutes, and for well done you will want to bake for 8 to 10 minutes.

Websites straighted out

Another change has happened. I am removing the blog from mywiseguys.com because personal information is being pulled up in relation to mywiseguys which doesn't look very professional.

So I am removing the blog (and any personal stuff) from mywiseguys.com and hosang.org

I still want a place to just jot down those thoughts and share pictures and found blogger.com is the #1 blogging website on the internet. It's also linked to our gmail account which makes it easier for both Julie and I to post to.
